Setback Requirements

Absolute minimums — always add 100mm margin when possible.

At a glance
House slab / tiled roof / alfrescoDepth of pool (often −200mm)
Lightweight patio roof500mm
Retaining — pool on low sideWall height or pool depth — least
Retaining — pool on high sideBy wall height ↓
Sewer manhole1.5m
Sewer I/O1m
Council pipes1.2m or 3m
HSTP sprayer6m from dispersal
House slab / Tiled roof / AlfrescoDepth of pool

Setback = depth of pool away from the slab.

You can go closer than the pool depth when:

  1. A full-length bench is adjacent to the house (subtract width of bench of depth of pool)
  2. The pool is higher than the slab
  3. The slab/footing is lower than the top of the pool (subtract the height difference between top of pool and bottom of slab/footing)
  4. Slab piers in place
Rule of thumb: it's almost always possible to go 200mm closer to a house slab because of (C), when necessary.

Note on (D): requires an engineering plan as proof of piers — typically a "soil test and slab design".

Lightweight patio roof500mm

500mm from slab (coping plus drainage).

Retaining — pool on low sideLeast of the two

Setback is the height of the wall or the depth of the pool — whichever is least.

Retaining — pool on high sideBy wall height

When room is available:

  • Walls 1m or higher — bench must not be on the retaining-wall side due to fill. If not possible, contact Shannon.
  • Walls up to 1.4m — pool can be 500mm away.
  • Walls above 1.4m — set back the height of the wall.
Piers required on the retaining-wall side of the pool for walls 1m or higher.

Tight for space? It may be possible to go closer — contact Shannon.

Pipes, manholes & I/Os+100mm always
Sewer manhole1.5m
Sewer I/O1m
Council pipes1.2m or 3m (by diameter)
Always add 100mm margin on these.
HSTP sprayers6m

6m from the dispersal area — approx 16m from the centre of the sprayer circle.

The pool must comply with the HSTP plan, not the hose length on site.
